What is whois?

Whois is a query protocol used to retrieve registration information for domain names and IP address blocks. For domains, the record typically shows the registrar, registration and expiry dates, name servers, and contact details (some of which may be redacted under GDPR). For IP addresses, it shows the network owner, organisation, country, and abuse contact.

Whois data is maintained by regional internet registries (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC) for IP address space, and by accredited registrars for domain names.
