What We Collect

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the service is used. Google Analytics collects anonymized data including pages viewed, session duration, general geographic region (country/city level), browser type, and operating system. This data is processed by Google and subject to Google's Privacy Policy. We do not use this data to identify individual users.

Server Access Logs

Our web server records standard access logs containing your IP address, the URL requested, HTTP status code, and user agent string. These logs are retained for up to 30 days for security monitoring and operational purposes, then automatically deleted.

Browser Storage (LocalStorage)

Mr.DNS stores two items in your browser's LocalStorage - your light/dark theme preference and a list of your recent lookups. This data never leaves your browser and is not sent to our servers. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser storage.

What We Don't Collect

  • DNS queries are not logged. The domain names and IP addresses you look up are processed server-side to perform the query but are not stored in any database or log file.
  • No user accounts. We do not collect names, email addresses, or passwords.
  • No payment data. The service is free and we do not handle payment information.

Third-Party Services

  • Google Analytics - usage analytics. See above.
  • MaxMind GeoLite2 - IP geolocation is performed using a local offline database. Your IP address is never sent to MaxMind.
  • Cloudflare DNS-over-HTTPS - some checker tools (DNSSEC, blacklist) use Cloudflare's DoH resolver. Queries are sent to Cloudflare's servers to resolve. (Cloudflare Privacy Policy)

Browser Extension

The Mr.DNS browser extension is an optional companion to this website. It runs entirely in your browser and only contacts mrdns.com when you explicitly run a lookup.

  • What is sent. The lookup target you enter (a domain, IP, URL, or pasted email headers) along with the chosen tool. Each request is signed with an HMAC key bundled in the extension and identifies itself as a Chrome extension call so the server can rate-limit it separately.
  • What is not sent. The extension does not read or transmit page content, cookies, browsing history, tabs, or selected text - except in two cases that you initiate: right-clicking and choosing "Look up X on Mr.DNS" sends only the selected text or link URL, and clicking "This page" in the DevTools panel sends only the inspected tab's hostname.
  • Stored locally. Recent lookups, theme preference, and a small in-flight lookup hint are stored in chrome.storage.local. None of this data ever leaves your browser.
  • External resources. The extension loads the flag-icons stylesheet from the jsdelivr CDN to render country flags. No data about you is sent in that request beyond a normal HTTP fetch.
  • Partner links. Some result cards link to Generator Labs (blacklist and certificate monitoring) and GoodTLS (TLS configuration guides). These are clearly labeled, optional, and clicking them is the only way information flows to those sites.

Extension server logs are subject to the same 30-day retention and "no DNS query logging" rules as web traffic above.

Cookies

Mr.DNS does not set any first-party cookies. Google Analytics may set cookies in accordance with its own policy.

Your Rights

Because we do not store personal data tied to individual users, we cannot retrieve or delete records on request beyond what is described above. Server access logs are automatically purged after 30 days. If you have a specific concern, contact us at the address below.
