What is an IP address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to each device on a network. IPv4 addresses use a 32-bit format (e.g. 198.51.100.1) while IPv6 uses a 128-bit format (e.g. 2001:db8::1) to accommodate the growing number of internet-connected devices. Your public IP address is assigned by your Internet Service Provider and is visible to every server you connect to.

This page detects your IPv4 and IPv6 addresses separately by connecting to protocol-specific endpoints. Many modern connections are dual-stack, meaning they can use both simultaneously. Click the PTR Lookup button next to any IP to query reverse DNS and find the hostname associated with that address.
